PHILLIP BOA & THE VOODOO CLUB
Awakened sensation that persists under the influence of Punk

First of all, I want to celebrate. What celebrate? That's because Phillip Boa & The Voodoo Club's work will finally be released in Japan. With excellent bands such as The Fall, Pere Ubu, and Big Black being overlooked, this is a feat and I would like to be honestly pleased as their old fan.

This strangely-named band from West Germany was formed in 1987 and made the debut from an indie label JA! Music.

In 1985, they released the first album "PHILISTER". And the following year they founded their own label Constrictor, and released "ARISTCRACIE". While they introduced pioneering groups such as Christian Hound from the label, they toured and steadily gained acclaim in West Germany and England, then signed to Polydor. In 1988, they released "COPPER FIELD" with John Leckie as the producer.

Their sound is full of variety, from early offensive numbers to current pop songs, but their appeal is still the strange combination of The Voodoo and Der Rabe's rhythm section and pop melody lines. In addition, it is a unique world where Pia's crystal vocal and Phillip Boa's sharp guitar cut in. What dominates it is the feeling of being awakened (but never cold) as a whole. As you can see from the title of the Constrictor's compilation album "10 YEARS AFTER THE GOLDRUSH (1987)", they are definitely influenced by Punk. And they are one of the few bands at the moment who flexibly interpret and express it in their own way, without limiting it to a biased musical style or rigid politics.

In the fourth work "Hair", which is the debut work in Japan this time, the pop part so far is a little hidden, but the awakened viewpoint is still alive. It's like giving up on the fact that things haven't changed 13 years since then, but instead it seems that it is taking a proper stance without expecting too much from the surroundings. Therefore, I feel a certain response. Go for it.
